Hull High School In Retrospect

Many former classmates remember the very successful provincial championship boys AND girls basketball teams at Hull High School, and coach Ruth Bates. People remember the team captains / co-captains, Beverley Isles and Vivian Charron for the girls championship team, and Skip Lebrun and Jimmy Brunet for the boys championship team. All four are coming to our class reunion!

On the girls team, players included Vivian Charron, Sandy Brown, Sylvia Keyes, Beverley Isles, Sandra McClelland, Jean McConnell, Anne Seaman, Anne French, et al.

On the boys team, players included Skip Lebrun, Jimmy Brunet, Roger Brunet, Bob Delaney, Markku Kujala, Hans Ohling, et al.

There were so many others who played on the girls and boys basketball teams at Hull High School over the years, from Bob Bagley, André Laberge, Dick Lamb, Don Rombough, to Barbara Hammond, Karen Lynch, Judy Radmore, Penny Steele, Diane Christie, Monica MacDonald, et al.

Others remember the dances in the gym on Friday nights, when the chaperone tag team of Mrs. Burden and Mrs. Christie patrolled the bushes and the shadows outside the school to find the young sweethearts and get them back into the gym. Mrs. Christie always wanted the lights in the gym turned up so she could keep an eye on everybody! Eddie Van Zant remembers Mrs. Christie and the gym lights! Others remember going to Kouri’s after the dances for a late night snack. While still others remember going to the submarine races by the Champlain Café in the middle of the Ottawa River!

Classmates remember Mrs. Weir’s and Mrs. Wallingford’s delicious homemade soup, sandwiches, and butter tarts in the cafeteria. They had such great smiles! Always!

Some remember when Don Rombough had his clothes drying on his clothes line stolen by an escapee from the Hull Jail, leaving poor Don with the jail’s striped outfit to wear.

Others remember Wayne McGillivray playing his guitar in the gym on the lunch hours and singing Jim Reeves songs, “Anna Marie” and others. Others remember Robin and Jill Moir’s great singing voices. Robin went on to sing in her own band. Wayne went on to play guitar and sing at social functions while he served with the RCMP.

And others remember Kathy Kehl’s sainted blessings, including “Santa Maria!” and “Caramba!”
